La Tomatina Tomato Festival
Want to witness the world’s largest food fight? Head to La Tomatina in Bunol, near Valencia, Spain.
If you’re heading to the Algarve this summer, don’t miss the chance to check out the annual sardine festival in Portimão, celebrating a traditional delicacy to a backdrop of live music.
Freshly cooked sardines are well worth travelling to taste – the aroma as they grill over charcoal is something else, particularly on warm summer evenings. A Portuguese delicacy, 2,500kg of sardines were consumed at last year’s festival, which attracted over 120,000 visitors.
In addition to live music and craft stalls, expect historical reenactments of fisherfolk landing sardine catches.
